Plumb Medic comes through for the win...again! My water heater was old and the piping was wonky. Nick installed a better water heater and brought all the wonky stuff up to code. I always recommend Plumb Medic for plumbing needs. They're awesome!
Cain Was super friendly and knowledgeable. He stayed late to get the job done and did great work Will Call again if needed and would definitely recommend
Plumb Medic is my go to for water leaks and other plumbing issues. I have used them on multiple occasions to solve tricky issues that are typical of older homes. They were quick to come out and assess and quick to complete the project. Cameron, Cole, and Corey were polite, diligent, and frankly good at what they do. Happily recommend Plumb Medic to others and will use them should I have a new issue arise.
HIGHLY recommend! So professional!! Arrived on time, great communication and went above and beyond!!! Very reasonably priced, too!!
Thank you so much for the great service. I called that morning because my toilet was continuously running, and you came out that day. You diagnosed the problem as too much pressure and fixed the problem, and got me back in code. Your professionalism and attention to detail are very much appreciated. I will definitely recommend you to anyone that needs a professional and reasonably priced plumbing service.
Completely thrilled with the service and the prompt responses. I called on the weekend and received a call back within 24 hours. They were honestly, professional and got us up to code! Thank You!
Nick replaced a wax ring on my son’s toilet. He said he was very friendly and did a great job!
I rely on reviews a good bit but rarely write them. The glowing reviews are what led me to call Cameron/Plumb Medic LLC to get an estimate for installing a new Toto toilet that I ordered and had sitting in boxes in my hallway to replace my 43 year old Briggs toilet, yes 43 years ! Cameron returned my call immediately, was very knowledgeable and gave me a price that beat 2 other local plumbing companies even offering a discount for 2 toilets at once. I only had the one but am expecting delivery tomorrow for the second one. Cain and Eric came the next day to install my toilet. They were down to earth, easy to talk to , professional hardworking guys that knew their stuff! Plus, they are animal lovers like myself. I can honestly say that it was a pleasure having them at my house. They installed my new Toto and I plan to try to request them for the second Toto install. After using numerous plumbers/plumbing companies through the years I am happy and relieved to have found Plumb Medic and plan on making them my "go to " plumbers. This may sound odd but I do love my Toto !!! Barb Above review was several years ago. This 2nd review is from March 13 2026. Cameron and Corey came and installed a new Bradford White water heater for me. They did an exceptional job with attention to detail. Cameron noticed water seeping from an old connection above his work, accessed it and made the repair at no extra cost. I asked about replacing my 40 plus year old handle on the main water shut off to house at back of basement. Cameron was thoughtful enough to suggest that he could move it lower so I could reach it without a ladder -hopefully I won’t ever need to. He replaced it with a ball valve handle which is superior to the old school round handle that exterior faucets use and gave me a discount since they were installing the water heater. I couldn’t have asked for a more pleasant experience. Plumb Medic , Cameron and crew are the BEST.
As always they come through with a reasonable price and get the work done. I have used them multiple times and they will always be my first call.
Cameron and team did excellent and extensive work through our house. They cared for our home like it was theirs. Highly recommend.
I am a repeat client. They are very professional. They quickly diagnose problems and present alternative solutions to each issue. They are a pleasure to work with.
Cameron and Corey were professional, freindly, knowledgeable and honest. I told them the issues I was having and knew exactly what to do to fix the problem. They don’t cut corners, and fix the problem RIGHT , and take pride in their work.
Cain and Eric were schedule to come and replace a weird leaking outdoor faucet and replace some stuff in a bathroom. They did this in the usual timely and professional manner. They noticed an indoor leak and opened the wall to find a bigger problem. Thank goodness and a mitigation company was called. At the same time I had a sewer problem and they quickly got Cole out to ream and camera the sewer. Highly recommend this service.
Called Plumb Medic after I got a 1300 water bill assuming I had a leak. Cole came out in a POURING rainstorm. Checked our meter outside getting soaked several times after shutting off house water, and came back to tell me we had no leak and there was no charge. I was shocked he would come out and not charge me. I will use Plumb Medic in the future for every plumbing issue. That’s amazing customer service.
Fantastic customer service! Excellent communication, and follow up, prompt, professional and very helpful and patient answering my questions. I highly recommend them without reservation!
We encountered the dreaded, dirty rusty water in our sinks and tubs and knew we needed to replace our water heater. I called Plumb Medic and after a brief discussion we were scheduled for a new install 2 days later. They were on time, on budget and the area was spic-and-span when they finished up. The quality of the joints and connections of the new copper piping needed was impressive - it was like a work of art. They were friendly, professional, honest and super easy and comfortable to do business with. I can highly recommend Plumb Medic without reservation!!
We had a fantastic experience with them. They were prompt, professional, and extremely knowledgeable. They quickly diagnosed the issue, explained everything clearly, and completed the repair efficiently. The pricing was fair with no surprises. It’s hard to find reliable service these days, but they absolutely delivered. Highly recommend for any plumbing needs!
Clean install. On time. Professional and fair Price. Highly recommended
I definitely recommend Plumb Medic. Water heater finally broke and they came out and replaced it the same day. Good pricing and great customer service
Cole was capable, quick, and knowledgeable. He did solid work for a good price.
Plumb Medic was great to work with. We had a water issue and they came out quickly, figured out exactly what was going on, and explained everything clearly along the way. The technician was patient, knowledgeable, and really on top of his work. He also referred us to a water remediation company to dry out the affected areas, which made the whole situation much easier to handle. I really appreciated the professionalism and friendliness they showed throughout the process. Overall, a very good experience and I wouldn’t hesitate to use them again or recommend them.
The entire experience was great from start to finish. It started with a phone call with Cameron. He gave me an estimate and when I mentioned I was getting estimates from other businesses he provided me with several questions to ask them. Next step was an in person estimate. Cole came out, gave an estimate then emailed me what we had discussed. When Cole came out with one other person (I forget his name) they were early, finished the work soner than they said, cleaned up then the bill was what we were quoted. Great service, great people and reasonable prices. I would recommend them to everyone adn will use the again when we need them.
I called Plumb Medic after discovering water in my garage. The owner, Cameron, came to my home at 8:30pm and detected a slab leak behind the water heater. Repairs were made the next day. Cameron is very personable and professional. I highly recommend him and his team for all plumbing needs.
Such great service. Knowledgeable, friendly and honest. Will definitely call them anytime I need a plumber.
Have been using Plumb Medic last 2 years and very satisfied. Cole was excellent. Strongly recommend!
Plumb Medic is absolutely the best. I’ve used them for multiple services and repairs, and every experience has been consistently excellent. Their communication is clear and timely, and the entire team is professional from start to finish. They’re honest, knowledgeable, and I always feel confident the work is done right. Truly the only plumbing company I trust and continue to use. Highly recommend!
Quick and responsive, friendly and helpful. Best plumber experience ever. 100% recommend.
Cameron and the team did an awesome job with our replumb. In and out in a day, competitive pricing, and they were great to work with throughout the process. Highly recommend
One of the most professional and efficient companies I’ve ever worked with. They came in and diagnosed the problem and got to work immediately. I can’t recommend them enough.
I would highly recommend!!! Cain and Eric went way above and beyond to help us out in our situation. They were very professional, knowledgeable, kind and answered all of our questions and concerns! I can not recommend them enough!
Cameron and his team have helped me out many times over the years, from leaks to running toilets and most recently, the replacement of my water heater. They’re always prompt, thorough and super respectful, their quotes are clear and transparent and they do a wonderful job explaining everything so you know exactly what you’re getting. I never feel like I’m being upsold or pressured into anything, it genuinely feels like they care - like it’s a friend or family member helping out. Their work is great too! Will hire again and again 😁
Cain and his brother Eric did an amazing job. I called Cameron and he was able to get someone out quickly despite a busy schedule. Honest, professional, on time, and no unnecessary repairs. Plus excellent pricing. All around the best —the only plumbing company I recommend.
They came when they said they would and the plumber was very nice and took care of it in the most efficient way possible, so there wasn't any superfluous charges. I highly recommend this company!
Reliable, clean, quick, fair priced. Thank you Plumb Medic for helping us! 🙂
Cameron and Corey did a fantastic job replacing my tankless hot water heater. Everything was explained to me.
We have used Plumb Medic several times over the years for our plumbing needs. Cameron and his team have always been honest and professional. Recently we had a toilet installed in which Cameron himself came out and installed. He arrived within the window he promised given the busy holiday season, which is extremely rare these days. There were some defects with toilet we purchased from Home Depot, which caused the install to take longer than expected. He had mentioned prior to coming out that his kid had a Christmas program that day, but should be able to install the toilet in time. Due to the toilet defect I’m pretty sure he missed his kid’s performance, which killed me inside. I wished he would have told me, because I would have told him to go and come back tomorrow. This just proves Cameron’s dedication to his craft and his customers. We appreciate him and his family for his dedication and highly recommend him and his team to anyone who has plumbing needs. Thank you again Cameron and we wish you and your family a very merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
Great response, communication, work and reasonable price. On site within a couple of hours for a service main break. Ask for Cole.
The gentleman that came was awesome! He explain everything he was looking at and how much it would cost beforehand. He told me if it was too much that he could break it down to what should he done first. He worked office fly and checked everything to make sure all was done correctly
Cameron and team are great guys and have always been good to finish projects and help in emergencies. I have used them to finish out a laundry room project, replace toilets, replace a water heater and fix a mainline break to my house. They have always been quick and fair! I have tried several companies and plumbmedic has always treated my emergencies as if it was their own home emergencies. Can’t go wrong with this company.
Great experience! Cole from plumb medic did a thorough assessment of the issue and explained everything in details.
Cam and Jesse went above and beyond for us. From the initial call they were professional and courteous while walking me through what needed to be done on my basement rough in. The bid was very fair and they showed up on time and completed the job quicker than I expected. No corners were cut and the job was meticulously done. They also replaced my hot water heater. I can’t say enough about the Plumb Medic. It is very refreshing to work with a company like theirs. I highly recommend Plumb Medic for any of your plumbing needs.
Used them 3 times, always show up on time, fixed the issue and their prices are great.

Tankless Water Heaters in Woodstock, GA
Tankless water heaters work fundamentally differently from traditional tank units. Cold water enters the unit when a hot water tap opens, passes through a high-output heat exchanger, and exits hot. Gas tankless models use a powerful burner that fires only when water flows; electric models use heating elements that activate on demand. Because there is no stored hot water, the unit only consumes energy during actual use. Most tankless units mount on a wall, freeing up floor space compared to bulky tanks. Lifespan typically reaches 15 to 20 years or longer with proper maintenance, roughly double what tank units provide. Endless hot water is the headline benefit, since the unit cannot run out the way a tank can. The technology has matured significantly over the past decade.
Sizing tankless systems requires careful flow rate calculations. A typical shower uses 2 to 2.5 gallons per minute, dishwashers run around 1.5 GPM, and washing machines pull about 2 GPM. Adding up the simultaneous fixtures gives you the required flow rate the unit must deliver. Incoming groundwater temperature in Georgia drops significantly during winter, which affects how much the unit can heat at peak flow. Plumb Medic factors winter performance into sizing recommendations, so you do not end up with lukewarm showers in January. Higher BTU input means greater heating capacity, but it also requires larger gas lines. Some homes need two units in parallel for very high demand. Proper sizing prevents performance problems that cannot be fixed after installation.
Gas supply is one of the biggest considerations for tankless installation. Most tankless units require larger gas lines than traditional tank heaters because of their high BTU input. A typical tank heater uses 30,000 to 40,000 BTU, while a whole-home tankless unit can require 150,000 to 199,000 BTU. The existing gas line, meter, and regulator may need upgrades to handle the increased demand. Plumb Medic is TracPipe certified, so we install flexible CSST gas lines cleanly and efficiently. Proper gas pressure under both static and dynamic conditions is critical for performance. We measure pressure at the unit during operation to confirm adequate supply. Gas line sizing affects everything from ignition to peak heating output.
Venting requirements differ from traditional water heaters. Most modern condensing tankless units use Category IV venting, which involves PVC, CPVC, or polypropylene pipe rated for high temperatures. Non-condensing units typically need stainless steel venting. Vent runs have specific length and turn limits set by manufacturers. Termination points must meet clearance requirements from doors, windows, and air intakes. Direct-vent models pull combustion air from outside through a concentric pipe, simplifying installation in tight spaces. We verify vent slope, support, and termination locations against manufacturer specifications. Improper venting causes shutdowns, error codes, and potential carbon monoxide hazards.
Electric tankless options exist for homes without natural gas or propane. They are popular for point-of-use applications like adding hot water to a remote bathroom or workshop. Whole-home electric tankless units exist but require very high amperage, often 80 to 160 amps total across multiple breakers. Most existing residential electrical panels cannot support whole-home electric tankless without significant upgrades. Point-of-use electric units work well for single fixtures and run on standard 240-volt circuits. Plumb Medic evaluates your specific situation to determine which option fits best. Electric tankless units have fewer moving parts than gas models but limited capacity. They suit certain applications very well.
Water quality has a major impact on tankless lifespan and performance. Hard water in much of metro Atlanta deposits minerals on the heat exchanger, reducing efficiency and eventually causing damage. Annual descaling is critical for tankless units, especially in homes without water softeners. The descaling process circulates a mild acid solution through the unit to dissolve mineral buildup. Pre-installed isolation valves with hose connections make descaling much easier and faster. Plumb Medic installs these valves on every new tankless installation. Water softeners or scale inhibitors significantly extend the time between descaling and protect the heat exchanger. We recommend water testing as part of the planning process for tankless installation.
Costs for tankless installation typically run higher than tank replacement, but long-term economics often favor tankless. Installation costs range from $3,500 to $6,500 for most residential applications, depending on the unit, gas line work, and venting requirements. Premium models with high efficiency and advanced features cost more upfront but save money long-term. Federal tax credits, utility rebates, and manufacturer promotions sometimes apply to high-efficiency tankless units. Operating costs are typically 24% to 34% lower than tank water heaters in homes with moderate hot water use. Plumb Medic identifies available rebates and provides documentation needed to claim them. Wisetack financing spreads the upfront cost over manageable monthly payments. The long-term value usually justifies the higher initial investment.

Why Hire A Licensed Plumber For Your Tankless Water Heaters
Tankless water heater installation involves gas, electrical, venting, and water connections in ways that demand professional expertise. Plumb Medic technicians are fully licensed, insured, and Navien certified for the systems we install most often. Improper gas line sizing causes ignition failures and poor performance; incorrect venting can release carbon monoxide into your home. Manufacturer warranties almost always require licensed installation to remain valid, with detailed documentation needed for claims. Our team pulls permits, coordinates inspections, and handles code compliance throughout the project. TracPipe certification means we install gas line upgrades safely and efficiently. Maintenance and repairs require specialized knowledge of error codes, control boards, and combustion analysis that DIY work cannot provide. Insurance companies may deny claims tied to unpermitted or unlicensed work, especially for major systems. Plumb Medic provides upfront pricing, financing through Wisetack, and waived diagnostic fees on repairs. Hiring a licensed plumber protects your home, your warranty, and your investment in the system.
Most Common Tankless Water Heaters Questions
Tankless water heaters generate plenty of questions about cost, performance, and whether they fit specific homes. Below are clear answers to the questions Woodstock homeowners ask most often before making the switch.
Tankless water heaters cost more upfront, but the long-term value often justifies the investment. The unit itself plus installation typically runs $3,500 to $6,500, compared to $1,500 to $2,800 for a traditional tank replacement. Energy savings of 24% to 34% in homes with moderate hot water use add up over the unit’s lifetime. Lifespan of 15 to 20 years versus 10 to 12 years for tank units means fewer replacement cycles. Endless hot water eliminates the frustration of running out during back-to-back showers. Wall mounting frees up floor space, which matters in smaller utility closets or basements.
Several factors affect whether tankless makes sense for a specific home. Households with very low hot water use may not recoup the higher upfront cost in energy savings. Homes with frequent simultaneous high-flow demand, like multiple showers running at once, may need careful sizing or two units. Hard water accelerates wear on the heat exchanger, so water softeners or annual descaling become important. Existing gas lines, electrical service, and venting paths all influence installation cost and complexity. Plumb Medic evaluates your specific situation honestly. We recommend tankless when it fits and tank units when those make more sense.
The math often favors tankless for homes planning to stay 7 or more years. Energy savings, longer lifespan, and avoided replacement costs typically pay back the higher upfront investment over that timeframe. Federal tax credits and utility rebates sometimes reduce the effective cost significantly. Wisetack financing makes the upfront cost manageable through monthly payments. Plumb Medic provides honest cost comparisons between tank and tankless options before any work begins. We are not biased toward one or the other; the right answer depends on your home and your goals. Many of our customers report high satisfaction after switching to tankless. Some prefer staying with tank units, and that is a fine choice when the economics support it.
Tankless water heaters typically last 15 to 20 years, often longer with proper maintenance. This roughly doubles the lifespan of traditional tank water heaters, which average 10 to 12 years. The longer lifespan comes from several design advantages. Tankless units do not store hot water, so there is no tank to corrode and fail. Components like heat exchangers, igniters, and flow sensors can be repaired or replaced individually rather than scrapping the entire unit. Premium brands like Navien offer warranties up to 15 years on the heat exchanger, reflecting confidence in the design.
Maintenance plays a huge role in actual lifespan. Annual descaling is the single most important maintenance task, particularly in areas with hard water like Cherokee County. Scale buildup damages the heat exchanger over time, which is the most expensive component in the unit. Cleaning inlet filters, inspecting the venting, and verifying gas pressure are also part of regular care. Some manufacturers extend warranties when annual professional maintenance is documented. Plumb Medic offers maintenance services tailored to tankless systems. Following the manufacturer’s care schedule pays off through years of additional service.
Several factors can shorten or extend tankless lifespan beyond average ranges. Water hardness, usage patterns, gas pressure stability, and installation quality all matter. Homes with water softeners typically see longer tankless life because mineral buildup is reduced. Heavy daily usage stresses the unit more than light use, though tankless designs handle continuous operation well. Quality of installation affects long-term reliability, including proper venting, gas line sizing, and electrical connections. Plumb Medic installations follow manufacturer specifications precisely, which protects long-term performance. Our Navien certification ensures factory-correct installation methods. Customers who follow our maintenance recommendations regularly see units pass 20 years of service.
Tankless water heater output is measured in gallons per minute (GPM) at a specific temperature rise. A typical residential tankless unit produces between 4 and 11 GPM, depending on model and incoming water temperature. The temperature rise required affects output significantly. In Georgia, winter groundwater can drop into the 50s, requiring a higher temperature rise to reach a comfortable 120 degrees Fahrenheit at the tap. A unit rated 8 GPM at 35-degree rise might only deliver 6 GPM at 70-degree rise. Sizing for winter conditions ensures year-round performance.
Common fixture flow rates help illustrate capacity needs. A standard shower uses 2 to 2.5 GPM, a dishwasher uses 1 to 2 GPM, and a washing machine uses 1.5 to 2 GPM. Bathroom faucets typically use 0.5 to 1 GPM, while kitchen faucets run 1 to 1.5 GPM. Most households see peak demand during morning routines, when multiple bathrooms may be in use simultaneously. A properly sized tankless unit handles this peak without performance drops. Larger homes with several bathrooms may need a unit rated 9 GPM or higher, or two units in parallel.
Some demand patterns exceed even large tankless units. Filling a large soaking tub while running showers requires significant flow capacity. Whole-house demand of 11 GPM or more pushes the limits of single residential tankless units. Plumb Medic evaluates peak demand carefully during planning. We use manufacturer sizing charts combined with field experience to recommend the right capacity. Sometimes the right answer is a larger unit, sometimes two units, and occasionally a hybrid system with tank and tankless components. Honest sizing prevents disappointment and ensures the system performs as expected. Our Navien certification means we know these systems inside and out.
Yes, tankless water heaters require regular maintenance to perform reliably and reach their full lifespan. Annual descaling is the most important task, especially in areas with hard water. The process involves circulating a mild acid solution through the unit to remove mineral buildup on the heat exchanger. Without descaling, scale gradually reduces efficiency, causes error codes, and eventually damages the heat exchanger itself. Pre-installed isolation valves with hose connections make descaling quick and inexpensive. Plumb Medic installs these valves on every new tankless installation as standard practice.
Other maintenance tasks support overall reliability. Inlet water filters need cleaning to prevent debris from blocking flow sensors. Combustion air intake screens should be checked for dust, lint, or insect blockages. Vent terminations need inspection for proper clearance and condition. Condensate drains on condensing models can clog with debris over time. Gas pressure and combustion analysis verify the burner operates within manufacturer specifications. Each task takes minutes but prevents larger problems. Annual service appointments cover all of these in one visit.
Skipping maintenance shortens tankless lifespan and voids warranties on premium units. Manufacturers like Navien require documented annual professional service for extended warranty coverage. Plumb Medic provides detailed service records that support warranty claims if needed. Maintenance costs are modest, typically under $250 for a complete annual service. Compare that to a heat exchanger replacement, which can run over $1,500 in parts alone. The math strongly favors regular maintenance. Our Navien certification means we follow factory specifications exactly. Customers who maintain their units regularly avoid expensive surprises and get many years of reliable service.
Tankless water heater installation is one of the most complex residential plumbing projects, and DIY work is strongly discouraged. The installation involves gas line work, high-voltage electrical connections, specialized venting, and pressurized water systems. Each area requires specific training and tools that most homeowners do not have. Improper gas line sizing causes ignition failures and poor performance. Incorrect venting can release carbon monoxide into living spaces. Mistakes in any area can damage the unit, void warranties, or create serious safety hazards.
Manufacturer warranties almost always require professional installation by licensed plumbers. Self-installed units typically have warranty claims denied entirely, which is a significant financial risk on a $3,500 to $6,500 investment. Permits are required in most jurisdictions, and DIY installations rarely pass inspection. Code requirements include specific gas pressures, vent terminations, expansion tanks, isolation valves, and electrical connections. Each detail matters for safety and performance. Insurance claims tied to DIY water heater installations are often denied if damage occurs.
Plumb Medic makes professional tankless installation accessible through transparent pricing, financing, and discounts. Wisetack financing spreads the upfront cost over manageable monthly payments. Military and senior discounts apply to installations. We waive the diagnostic fee on any future repairs we handle on the system. Our Navien certification means factory-correct installation methods. Permits, inspections, and warranty registration are handled as part of every job. The total cost difference between DIY and professional installation is smaller than people expect after factoring in tools, permits, and time. Calling a licensed plumber is the smarter financial decision in nearly every case.
Tankless sizing depends on peak simultaneous demand and the temperature rise required. Start by listing all the hot water fixtures that might run at the same time during peak demand, like morning showers and breakfast dishwashing. Add up their flow rates in gallons per minute. A two-shower simultaneous demand might total 5 GPM, while a busier scenario with shower, dishwasher, and laundry could hit 7 GPM. The unit must deliver this flow rate at the required temperature rise.
Temperature rise calculations matter especially in Georgia winters. Incoming groundwater drops into the 50s during cold months, requiring more energy to reach a comfortable 120 degrees Fahrenheit at the tap. A unit rated 9 GPM at 35-degree rise might only deliver 6.5 GPM at 70-degree rise. Sizing for winter performance prevents the disappointment of weak showers on cold mornings. Manufacturer charts show output at various temperature rises, and we use these along with field experience for accurate recommendations. Plumb Medic measures actual incoming water temperature when planning installations.
Household size and lifestyle factor into the sizing decision as well. A two-person household with staggered showers may do well with a smaller unit, while a family of five with overlapping schedules needs more capacity. Future plans like bathroom additions, family growth, or installing high-flow fixtures should influence sizing. Soaking tubs, body sprays, and rain showerheads dramatically increase demand. Plumb Medic asks about your specific routines and plans during planning. Right-sized units perform reliably for years; undersized units cause constant frustration. Oversized units cost more upfront but rarely perform poorly. Our Navien certification and field experience produce accurate sizing recommendations on the first try.
Yes, modern tankless water heaters routinely serve entire homes when properly sized and installed. Whole-home tankless units typically range from 150,000 to 199,000 BTU input, delivering 8 to 11 GPM at moderate temperature rise. This capacity handles most residential demand patterns, including simultaneous showers, dishwashers, and washing machines. Larger homes with very high peak demand sometimes use two units in parallel for total capacity exceeding 20 GPM. Configurations vary based on the specific home and usage patterns.
Whole-home tankless installation requires careful planning beyond just the unit. Gas line capacity must support the high BTU input, often requiring upgrades from existing tank water heater supply lines. Vent paths need to reach the outside through approved routes, with proper clearance at termination points. Electrical service, even for gas tankless units, includes 120-volt power for controls and ignition. Plumb Medic evaluates each system during planning, identifying any infrastructure upgrades needed. TracPipe certification helps with gas line work, often making upgrades cleaner and faster than traditional black iron.
Some homes face challenges that affect whole-home tankless feasibility. Long distances between the unit and far fixtures can create wait times for hot water. Recirculation systems solve this but add complexity and cost. Homes with very poor water quality may need water treatment before tankless installation makes sense. Existing gas service capacity sometimes cannot support the required BTU input without upgrades from the utility. Plumb Medic evaluates each home honestly and identifies the best solution. Sometimes that is a single whole-home unit, sometimes two units, and occasionally a different approach altogether. Our recommendations are based on what works best for your specific home, not generic averages.
The fundamental difference is how they heat water. Tank water heaters store 40 to 80 gallons of preheated water, ready for use whenever fixtures open. Tankless units heat water on demand as it flows through the heat exchanger, with no stored hot water. Tank units cycle on and off to maintain stored water temperature, consuming energy even when no hot water is being used. Tankless units only consume energy during actual hot water use. This difference drives most of the comparative pros and cons between the two technologies.
Tank water heaters cost less upfront, typically $1,500 to $2,800 installed compared to $3,500 to $6,500 for tankless. They offer a finite supply of hot water, with recovery time needed before another full draw is possible. Lifespan averages 10 to 12 years, often shorter in areas with hard water. They occupy floor space, usually in a closet, basement, or garage. Tank units have fewer parts that fail, making basic repairs simpler and less expensive in most cases. They handle very high simultaneous demand well within the limits of the stored capacity.
Tankless water heaters offer endless hot water, longer lifespan, lower energy costs, and space savings, but at higher upfront cost. They perform best with consistent moderate to high hot water use rather than very light use. Maintenance is more critical, with annual descaling protecting the heat exchanger. Repair costs on tankless units can be higher because of specialized components and electronics. Plumb Medic installs and services both technologies, giving honest recommendations based on your specific situation. We do not push one type over the other; the right answer depends on your home, budget, and habits. Both technologies have their place, and either can serve a home well when properly chosen and installed.
